Covid-19 Update: To protect their people from Covid delta variant an lockdown extension announced in Australia’s Capital till mid-October.
SYDNEY: Australian authorities announced the extension of the coronavirus lockdown of the nation's capital Canberra till mid-October, they said the measure was necessary while vaccinations are ramped up.
Since 12th August when a single case of covid-19 detected, about 400,000 Canberra residents were ordered to stay at home. Now there are 250 active cases caused by the highly infectious Delta variant, treated with full precautions and they want to avoid an outbreak that’s why the decision of lockdown extension was taken.
Australian Capital Territory chief minister Andrew Barr said, while ensuring Canberra becomes "highly vaccinated".
"This is the safest path forward and it will lead to a safer Christmas, a safer summer holiday period, and a safer 2022", he told the reporters.
Almost 53 percent of over 16-s got vaccinated with their both doses. This is the highest rate of the fully vaccinated population which will help to fight the delta variant of the coronavirus.
State and federal leaders of the country decided on a national roadmap for reopening, which could see border and travel restrictions opened when double dose vaccination rates reached 70 to 80 percent.
Since the pandemic began Australia recorded 75000 cases of covid and 1100 deaths. Hoping this extended lockdown controls the situation we all can see a better morning one day.
